Chapter 6

George quickly lost interest in the group and nudged Adeline by the arm. “Come, Adeline. We must speak to all the guests.”

She nodded and turned back to Gilroy. “Please excuse me.”

They moved on together to talk with an older couple I did not know. I also excused myself to keep a subtle eye on them in case he made any moves that might give him away. Since Adeline seemed perfectly content to remain by George’s side, I saw Luna standing beside Gilroy. She gave me a wink, so I knew she would monitor him for any clues.

Although I did not know exactly which year it was, I had a few clues that narrowed it down. Grandma Izzy was born in 1916, so it must have been before that, yet not so long before that Adeline was not already engaged in a secret relationship with Izzy’s father. Her letters hidden in the attic were proof of that. Since Uncle Oliver was already friends with Gilroy, he had to have been in college, so the earliest it could have been was 1912.

I watched as George spoke with several people, always staying near Adeline, but I could not be sure whether or not she liked that. I wanted contact with each of them to get a physical read. However, I had difficulty figuring out how to do that naturally and within the standards of decency for the day.

Adeline did not appear to pay anyone special attention, which was to be expected since I already knew she had kept the truth hidden for the rest of her life. George, remaining close and touching her arm occasionally, made me think they could not wait until marriage. He must have gotten cold feet when the scandal broke out and ran to spare his reputation.

As I studied their faces, I noticed Adeline begin to grow passionate at last. “It’s 1913!” she exclaimed, answering one of my many questions. “Why are women still treated as though we are incapable of intelligent thought and unworthy of a voice? I commend those who participated in the march and regret that I could not have joined them myself.”

She smiled as she sipped her drink, clearly unbothered by George’s judgmental, sidelong glance. I was so awed by how far back I had traveled in time that I had not expected to feel so comfortable there as quickly as I did. It did not seem like such a foreign era, but it felt like a party. The Edwardian people were just people, living as they knew how and learning how to improve the world one step at a time without having the benefit of looking back on themselves as much as I could.

It was also lovely to see Grandma Izzy take after her mother in standing up for the oppressed. From what I could tell, they were very alike, and I smiled to imagine the strength it had taken for Adeline to raise Izzy mainly on her own in such a short period of time.
